Drilling commences at Lone Pine

Here at SCM Projects we are very pleased and proud to tell you all that we were appointed late last year to Project Manage the new, Brisbane City Council funded, Koala Research Centre at the famous Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in the Brisbane suburb, Fig Tree Pocket. Things are in full swing after a lull over the Xmas break so that it’s ready for the official opening set down for June 30th this year.

A Koala doing it tough

As you would expect in this day and age, a big part of caring for the Koala’s, and the people entrusted with their care, relates to Energy Efficiency with a close focus on issues such as Solar Power and Glazing including special attention to air conditioning requirements resulting in a Geothermal system being installed. This system, often referred to as a Ground Source Heat Pump is expected to offer significant efficiency in both cooling and heating leading to direct operational cost savings and benefits. The initial stage of installing this system involves deep drilling into the ground, approximately 90 metres, which commenced last week and brings us to why Brisbane’s Lord Mayor was visiting the site.

Graham Quirk cuddles a Koala

For those that don’t already know Brisbane City Council is fulfilling a promise made by Graham Quirk made during the March 2016 elections by funding the $2.0 Million required to build the centre. As the Council is also contributing a further $1.3 million over the first 4 years of operation the Lord Mayor is justifiably keen to be involved with its progress. This is the reason he attended last week for a ceremonial turning of the first sod of ground at the commencement of drilling for the Geothermal Cooling System.

PS – the project is long completed now – We received a glowing testimonial from Council Council which you can read here

How much can a koala bear?

Also present at the official ceremony were Councillor David McLachlan, Robert Friedler, Managing Director of Lone Pine and our own MD Jacon Parry. Whilst Graham Quirk got to cuddle a Koala, Jacon didn’t  – and there’s your answer to ‘How much can a Koala bear?’ – apparently not Jacon :)♥
